generative.fm vs Grain Focus: two kinds of never-looping ambient.
generative.fm and Grain Focus both play ambient that never loops. Here is how they differ on price, timers, time of day, and iPhone playback.
Both never loop
generative.fm, made by Alex Bainter, is one of the best free things on the internet: endless, human-composed generative ambient, with no ads and no account. If you have never tried it, start there. Grain Focus plays music that never loops too. The difference is what each one is built around. generative.fm is a listening library. Grain Focus is a work-session tool.
What generative.fm does best
- A large catalog of generators, and new ones are added.
- Pay what you want. It is free, with no ads and no account.
- The generators are open source (MIT) on GitHub.
- Made for exploring many ambient styles.
What Grain Focus adds for work sessions
- The mood follows your local hour.
- Six themes for focus.
- A 25-minute focus timer is free. Longer timers come with Unlock.
- Background mode keeps playing on an iPhone lock screen, with Unlock.
- No account, no analytics, and no tracking pixels.
Price
- generative.fm is free. You can pay what you want.
- Grain includes 30 minutes of play a day and the 25-minute timer for free. Grain Unlock is $19 once, plus tax where applicable, through Polar. Mac and iPhone apps are planned, and your key will carry over to them.

Which one to pick
- generative.fm, for the widest free generative ambient, and for exploring.
- Grain Focus, for a one-tap focus session: a timer, a mood that follows the hour, and lock-screen playback.
- Plenty of people use both.
generative.fm is Alex Bainter's. Grain is not affiliated with generative.fm. Homepage facts were checked on November 1, 2026: no loops, pay what you want, no ads, no account, human-composed rather than AI, and new generators added. The public generators repository is MIT-licensed. This page does not claim offline listening or iPhone lock-screen playback for generative.fm.
